2008 September > Tastes of our Town

As a former Beach (or Beaches) resident, one concern when transplanting to Durham Region was the anticipated loss of unlimited dining choices. Turns out, I had no need to worry! All of the tastes and experiences that I had come to love in Toronto are not only abundant here in Durham, they often surpass the quality enjoyed downtown, and are made all the more sweet because the owners and chefs are friends from the community. I recently discovered the treasure of Chatterpaul’s, conveniently located at 3500 Brock Road North, between Taunton & Rossland. Opened in April of this year by local businesswoman Penny Johansen and Chef Chad Catterpaul, the upscale casual establishment has quickly become a favourite of the eastern GTA. The fully accessible restaurant boasts rich, warm décor and an energetic, inviting staff. The versatile space is ideal for business luncheons by day and romantic rendezvous in the evening. The goal of Chad and Penny is to exceed diner’s expectations each and every time by providing creative and unexpected dishes along with superior customer service. Chad varies the menu frequently, serving what is market fresh or catering to his creative whims. The number of frequent repeat customers is a good indication that his instincts are to be trusted. The dishes are intensely flavourful with unusual combinations with delightful results. For my meal, I decided to see what the fuss was about and ordered the Chatter Rib. The generous portion of beef back rib is braised in Moroccan spices and served over mash with greens. The meat was fall-off-the-bone tender, no need for a knife at all. The flavours blended perfectly, leaving me wanting more but too full to consider another bite. Until dessert….The Lime & White Chocolate Cheesecake was creamy, tangy and delightful on a dark chocolate cookie crust. It was beautifully presented and was the perfect ending to a fantastic dining experience. This autumn Chad will be introducing a new brunch menu and is also offering cooking classes. Drop by Chatterpaul’s, say hello to Penny and the staff, and get ready to become a frequent customer – the Chatterpaul’s experience is truly addictive!
